Two UPM Raflatac adhesives for office, logistics and cardboard packaging paper labels have been certified as recyclable in the paper and board-based packaging stream by the applied research and services institute Papiertechnische Stiftung (PTS).
These adhesives are now part of UPM Raflatac’s standard Offset and Digital paper label range, providing customers with the added benefit of recycling-compatible, verified labelling solutions without requiring any product changes.
UPM Raflatac adhesives applied on the paper labels verified by PTS: For the Offset range – Permanent SP34 and Extra permanent SP3H; For the Digital range – Permanent SPA3 and Extra permanent SXA7.
To evaluate the recyclability, PTS tested two of UPM Raflatac’s paper labels containing the referred adhesives. The labels were tested as part of the packaging material at a mass share of 10%, following the PTS-RH 021:2012 Category II methodology for evaluating the recyclability of paper and board-based packaging. Due to the obtained results of fibre yield, sheet adhesion and optical impurities, two of the UPM Raflatac adhesives applied on the paper labels received verification.
An example of usage: For a standard logistics cardboard envelope weighing 76.48g, with a paper label that is 101 x 152 mm weighing 1.5 gm, the label is 2% of the total packaging weight. Therefore, the envelope is verified recyclable in the OCC recycling stream when using UPM Raflatac label material with one of the PTS-approved adhesives.
