What David Crowther of Colour Graphic Services (AKA The Colour Doctor) doesn’t know about colour isn’t worth knowing. The colour specialist has been espousing the importance of colour management, offering a range of tools and training to manage colour from capture to output since 2004.
“There is really no excuse not to be involved in colour management today. Printing is about colour; and accuracy, predictability and consistency are key,” says Crowther. “When it comes to colour, you can’t control what you don’t measure, so it is really important to take some time to invest in training, buy a spectrophotometer, some software and start learning.”
One of the products Colour Graphics highlighted at PacPrint was the Oris X Gamut from CGS Publishing. X Gamut is fully automated colour management software for extended colour print on digital and conventional presses allowing spot colours to be accurately reproduced using a standard fixed seven- or eight-colour ink set (CMYK+X) – commonly orange, green and violet are added to CMYK.
Crowther says: “We have been fielding many inquiries from printers about extended colour printing (CMYK+X) and X Gamut from CGS-ORIS provides a simple, yet feature-rich software solution to fit into just about any existing workflow. In conventional packaging print there are great savings to be had from using a fixed ink set. Digital presses with extended CMYK+X ink sets can benefit as well. It is possible to achieve 95%+ of existing popular spot colour libraries within acceptable colour tolerances.
“X Gamut is available as a software subscription so it does not involve a big outlay. It does require some support and training input, which we can provide,” he adds.
